As we walk into Martin Tower, imagine the daily life of a Yeoman Warder. These dedicated individuals are more than just tourist attractions; they are living, breathing parts of British history.

To become a Yeoman Warder, one must have served at least 22 years in the armed forces and reached the rank of warrant officer or higher. This ensures that each Warder brings a wealth of military experience to their role.

The Yeoman Warders and their families actually live within the Tower complex. Picture modern apartments nestled within the medieval walls, where centuries-old traditions blend with contemporary life. In the evenings, after the tourists have departed, the Tower transforms into a small village community.

Their duties are diverse. By day, they conduct engaging tours, sharing tales of intrigue, famous prisoners, and royal history. They’re also responsible for the ceremonial care of the Tower’s famous ravens.

One of their most important roles is participating in the Ceremony of the Keys. This nightly ritual of locking up the Tower has been performed without fail for over 700 years, even during the World Wars.

The Yeoman Warders have their own private pub within the Tower called the Yeoman Warders Club. Here, they can relax after a long day, sharing stories and camaraderie over a pint of Beefeater Bitter.

Their distinctive Tudor-style uniform, worn on ceremonial occasions, is instantly recognizable. For everyday duties, they don a more practical dark blue and red uniform.

The Yeoman Warders are not just preservers of history, but a living bridge between the past and present. Their unique lifestyle within these ancient walls continues a centuries-old tradition, making them true guardians of one of Britain’s most iconic landmarks.
